What does the election teach us about reading?

Now that the election is reportedly over, let’s reflect on the reading skills kids need to understand this, As parents every moment can be a teaching moment. The election of the Unites States President is one of these moments.
Kids that struggle to read struggle to process written words and complex text. They also struggle with complex oral language. Often times they struggle with both.

The election is a great time to;

Introduce complex vocabulary and let kids experience and witness it. For example reading the word democracy and it’s definition is not an experience. Pairing the definition with what America witnessed brings the concept to life. Then hearing it or seeing it repeated during election time is the exposure kids need to remember it.

Educate your kid about the role of the President and the Declaration of Independence. Educating your kid early will build background knowledge, vocabulary and spark interest.

Point out the different types of text on the same topic. Read a magazine, newspaper, blog , pamphlet or a reference book about each presidential candidate. Point out the types of text you read and each texts purpose.

Teach your kids about perspective and show them how writers write with their own purpose. Show them different perspectives on the same idea.

Use this experience to teach your kid about facts, statistics and to analyze non fiction text. Show them how reading and education help make decisions like voting.

Model how you read for understanding. Your reading behavior and habits will transfer to your kid.
