Summer School

In the almost Post-CoVid atmosphere of school should my kid go to summer school?

Ask yourself these three questions…

1. Does my kid need the consistency of classroom instruction?
Some kids that need summer school need it to be in the learning environment. A kid that needs this environment may take at least a month to get use to school again with out summer school. The classroom environment is a routine that kids need to be comfortable in to learn.

2. Does my kid thrive from learning in a social setting?
Kids like to be with other kids. The group work, partner work, and social environment is one of the most powerful aspects of learning. I always say to my students, “you know, you know it, when you can teach it to someone else.” Summer school can build an environment of fun. learning and partnership.

3. Does my kid need support services?
Your kid needs summer school if they need support services. Experts like the speech pathologist, the occupational therapist and the physical therapist work summer school. As an O&G Therapist and Reading Consultant I meet my students at summer school every year.

If the answers to these questions is yes then you have to consider summer school. As always, consider your kids mental health too. If they are going to need support services and summer school for their entire academic career then don’t drag them kicking and screaming. A kid’s attitude towards learning is priceless and hard to fix.
