I had been concerned that my second grade daughter seemed to be struggling with reading and may even have had a learning disability.  She hated reading and would get so frustrated working through a text, stumbling over the simplest of words. I contacted Melissa to do some testing to determine what/if there were gaps or weaknesses and what I should do if that were the case.  Melissa listened to my concerns and we discussed the variety of options and ways to proceed.  She explained the process and procedure before testing and sat with us afterwards to thoroughly explain every aspect and outcome of the results.  Although it was determined my daughter didn’t have a learning disability, she did have some weaknesses in various areas.  Melissa offered resources and strategies to help my daughter build the skills and close the gaps so that she could be successful.  A year later, my daughter has blossomed into a strong reader with a love for reading.  I was thoroughly pleased with Melissa’s knowledge, professionalism, and genuine concern for my daughter.  I was also comforted by Melissa’s understanding about my concerns as a parent.  She made us feel like family rather than clients.  I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

All through school my son struggles to read. It was a constant battle with the school because when I brought up learning concerns they would tell me“Well you can’t get better at reading if you don’t read”, or “it’s all his attention”, thus putting the struggles off on my son rather than asking what else might be going on that prevented him from gaining skills. I found Melissa Saliva through professional channels and realized she was going to “dig in” and figure out the barriers to his learning. Mrs.Saliva didn’t just administer the standard protocol, she modified her approach based upon his performance. Through her assessment and expertise, it was discovered that he in fact had dyslexia and it was poor intervention all these years…..not his choice or in attention only.  With Mrs. Saliva’s help I was able to advocate and finally get an appropriate program for my son. He is now making progress and starting to find excitement and confidence in learning.
