Disaster
Like everyone else at this moment of time, we had a difficult decision to make. Send the kids to school, do distance learning or homeschool.
These choices are amazing, it is truly a blessing to have choices. Grappling with the stress and the pros and the cons of these choices are where the problems come in.
Going back and forth about educational decisions is one of the hardest parts of having children.
I have worked with parents who make these kinds of decisions for their kids all the time. These are the kids that struggle with reading. It starts simple. Missing a night of reading. Throwing in the towel on a classic novel they hate. Or telling them after hours of crying and studying it’s ok if they fail the stupid Algebra test.
I’ve learned that throwing in the towel and knowing when to do so is important.
For us our distance learning disaster came in the form of 2 things;
First a flood- our bathroom shower pipe broke and it was literally raining inside our house. Then, call in the construction crews. Add chaos to our well planned distance learning environment. So it’s not a quick fix more like months of construction.
Second Thing-Kids are always the uncontrollable factor. They miss their friends and want to go back.
This made me think about all the times I found the perfect reading material. The perfect program. The perfect lesson. or helped parents get the perfect programming all for the kid to say no thanks and hate it. It’s like-
Step 1. Worry and finally make a decision
Step 2.Uncontrollable factor-Have a flood
Step 3. Throw in the towel
Step 4. The construction months
So that’s it…distance learning is a done deal. Now I hope we can maintain some of our sanity through the construction months.
