What is Explicit Instruction?

Warning-Explicit Content Necessary

Most of us have used explicit language to tell people exactly how you feel, what to do or where to go so explicit instruction is similar without the colorful language.

Let me explain exactly what it is, how it is used, and why it is so important.

What is Explicit Instruction?

Explicit Instruction is breaking reading and learning down to structured specific steps. It’s laying tracks and beats down so any musician can follow it and play any song.

How is Explicit Instruction used with kids who have reading difficulties?

Explicit Instruction is most important when remediating foundational reading problems. Take for instance the band member example, the drummer analogy and phonological awareness. A kid would practice separating sounds in a small word like “Zep,” until they master it and then move on to hearing the syllables in the word “Zeppelin,” and immediately recognizing “Zep.”

Why is Explicit Instruction so important?

Explicit instruction uses practice, modeling and repetition to change practice into habit and transform learning to knowledge. Watch any band member practice till it’s perfect and you can see this process happen before your eyes.
