Welcome to Beacon Valley Literacy Services
As a Reading Consultant, we typically find words of encouragement like “read like a rock star”. To me, these words mean so much more than glory and fame. My brother is a true rock star. Like an actual talented musician. I grew up watching him master every instrument from drums, to guitar, to even a stand-up bass. I watched all the effort he made practicing and practicing. Then on stage, he made music effortlessly. The feeling he had was incredible.
I longed to be as talented as him but when I picked up any instrument I was terrible. Absolutely terrible. I was not the kind of kid that would practice something I was not good at. I just quit and never tried. I will always be a music lover but never a musician. So this experience is what I think of when I say Rock Star Reading. I see so many kids follow the path I took with music. They can’t put all the pieces together to read effortlessly. I watch their thirst for knowledge get blocked by literacy demands they can’t meet. To me, Rock Star Reading is practicing to the point where a kid can have a love of reading. The world is our stage and everyone deserves to read like a rock star.
